My understanding of leadership has changed for the better over my time in PL. When I first started my freshman year, I thought the ability to be a good leader was a quality you either possessed or you did not. I always thought I was the shy kid who was not born with the innate ability to lead and there was nothing I could do to change that fact. After my experience in PL, I now know this is not true because I have improved significantly in my leadership skills these past two years. PL has taught me different kinds of leadership and that leaders all possess different traits. I have learned there is no one type of person who is meant to be a leader and that everyone is a leader in their own way.
My leadership style is to take charge when I am very passionate or educated on a topic. If I know a lot about a topic, I feel more confident in my ability to be a leader. One of my strengths in leadership is accountability. When working in a group, I always get my share of the work done on time and it is well done. I will never be one to let other people down. Another one of my strengths, is furthering the agenda of the group rather than my own. I always make sure to never be selfish when working in groups and to do my part in order for it to be as successful as possible. If I am confident in my leadership ability, there is nothing stopping me from taking charge and making sure I accomplish the goal I set out to do.
I believe that my position paper about DACA, my leadership philosophy, and my paper about the leadership of Malala Yousafzai are evidence of my change in understanding of leadership. I chose my DACA essay out of the three position papers because it was the topic I was most passionate about. You can see my passion in my writing and this topic inspired me to want to go out and make a change in the world. I did not want to sit back and let others do the work for me. I wanted to be the one to create a change. In my leadership philosophy paper, I talked about the traits that I think are most important for a leader to possess. This paper really made me sit down and think about what the key aspects of being a leader are and I now aspire to possess all these traits. I now understand what I need to work on if I want to become what I believe is the ideal leader. Malala Yousafzai is one of my biggest leadership inspirations in life, so writing about her strength in different leadership styles showed me how I want to lead. I want to work on and adapt my leadership strengths everyday to embody more of how Malala leads.
In CPPL 200, we learned about leadership in groups, and the different roles people play in groups. Recently, I completed a physics project over zoom with two boys I had never met or talked to before. I had previously learned the different leadership roles that could be played in groups and I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, so I took on the role of coordinator. I learned in CPPL 200 that the coordinator is the person who organizes the group’s ideas and orchestrates the group’s work. In the past, I have always let other people take charge, and I would just stay quiet and make sure to get my work done based on the dates the group leader set. However, after my experience in PL, I was able to speak up and take on the role of coordinator, and I feel very proud of how our project turned out and in my leadership skills.
